BICYCLE TOURS OF THE HAWKESBURY
Route # 2 Richmond - Windsor loop
RICHMOND-WINDSOR-RICHMOND LOOP VIA RIVER FLATS

Starting from Richmond Park (opposite the Richmond Railway Station) proceed East along Windsor St. to Windsor. The RAAF base will be on the left after a beautiful avenue of old liquid amber trees (planted in Queen Victoria’s honour).

As you are leaving Richmond, there is a cycleway following the road through the park on the right as will as a bikelane along the road. The bikelane is good for watching airplane, the cycleway is good for getting away from traffic. The Hawkesbury Shire’s main tourist information center is in the park. Take care crossing back to and from the park, as Windsor Rd is a main arterial road. Soon after the RAAF base the Rum Corps Barracks Complex is on the left and is the site of the early regimental barracks.

On entering Windsor, turn left at the top of the hill into Moses St., past historic St. Matthew’s Anglican Church on the left and McQuade Park on the right. If you wish to explore Windsor, depart from the recommended route here and follow straight ahead to the main part of town.

To continue the ride from Moses St. Turn left down Greenway Cres. Pedal down the hill, notice the old stables that have been converted on the right and cross the little bridge. Continue along Cornwallis Rd.     Take the time to enjoy the rural atmosphere. Looking back, the architecture of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church dominates the scene. It was designed by Francis Greenway and reflects through it’s minimal ornament the Protestant ascendecy of those colonial times.

Access to the river can be found through Deerunbun Park on the right and there are toilets here, too. Continuing along Cornwallis Rd. for about 6kms passing turf farms you will come to a T section. Turn right and follow Edwards Rd. along the river. Looking across the river there is a high ridge, giving scenic relief to the flood plains. This stretch of river is known as Freemans Reach. Riding along you will pass some farm houses and Moxey’s dairy. There are great views to the Blue Mountains and a great sense of open country. Turn left up Powells Lane at the dairy but when you see the next Powell’s Lane sign on your left, go straight ahead onto the dirt road known as Triangle Lane. These paddocks often have tall corn growing in the late Summer. When you come to the T section, the Polo Club will opposite, turn left. Pugh’s Lagoon has a group of diverse water fowl and is a popular bird watching area. Kestrels and brown falcons frequent the area also. Ride straight ahead through the overarching tree campoy and you are at the western end of Windsor St. There is an interesting and historic cemetery at the top of the hill. To get back to Richmond Park just ride straight ahead for 400 metres and it will be on your right.
